Provincetown leaders impose stricter mask rules Sunday amid COVID-19 case surge

Provincetown officials during an emergency meeting Sunday approved a new indoor mask mandate and a measure clearing the way for stricter capacity limits on local businesses amid a surge of new COVID-19 cases since the July Fourth holiday weekend.

The measures, intended to help the town contain the virus’s spread, also came as the country battles increasing numbers of infections fueled largely by the virus’s Delta variant and a lagging national vaccination effort.

“COVID, unfortunately — and I think it’s depressing for many of us — isn’t going away anytime soon,” said Alex Morse, Provincetown’s town manager, during the meeting. “Provincetown is experiencing what other places will be experiencing, earlier.”
