It came one year after the England forward's move to Old Trafford collapsed as Dortmund held out for £108m.

In the period since, Frenchman Martial, 25, failed to make an impact with only seven goals.

It was instead veteran Edison Cavani, 34, who emerged as United's threat in front of goal, with Sancho, 21, now adding to the front line.

But according to the Daily Star, Martial's future has now been left in the balance with the club hoping to sell him.

They are also closing in on a deal to sign centre-back Raphael Varane, 28, who Real Madrid value at £50m.

Personal terms are already underway with defender Varane with United now looking at ways to bring in funds.

Martial - who signed from Monaco in 2015 for £44.5m - has attracted attention from Tottenham before.

But his £250,000-a-week wages will cause a stumbling block, with Spurs among those not interested in matching the figure.

Sancho will now make up an attack which already has England team-mates Marcus Rashford, 23, and Mason Greenwood, 19.

And United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - who has just signed a new three-year deal - was full of praise for his versatile new star.

He said: “He’s such a creative, positive winger and forward player. He can play wide, nip into the pockets and he excites the fans.
