Sajid Javid says he has made a 'full recovery' after testing positive for coronavirus last week and forcing Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak into self-isolation

Sajid Javid said he has made a 'full recovery' a week after testing positive for a coronavirus infection that forced Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak into self-isolation.

The Health Secretary, who had received both doses of the vaccine before testing positive, urged people to get their jabs after reporting he experienced only 'very mild' symptoms.

Mr Johnson's quarantine in his Chequers country residence is expected to end late on Monday.

The Prime Minister and the Chancellor initially tried to avoid isolation by saying they were taking part in a testing pilot, but backed down in the face of widespread public criticism.

Mr Javid's recovery follows junior health minister Jo Churchill announcing on Thursday that she was pinged by the NHS coronavirus app and will be required to quarantine.

Mr Javid, who replaced scandal-hit Matt Hancock in the Cabinet, tweeted: 'Full recovery from Covid a week after testing positive. Symptoms were very mild, thanks to amazing vaccines.

'Please – if you haven't yet – get your jab, as we learn to live with, rather than cower from, this virus.'

His encouragement for Britons to have the vaccine came as Britain's daily coronavirus cases fell for the fourth day in a row.

A total of 31,795 cases were reported in the UK on Saturday - a 41 per cent drop on last week - with over 46million people now having received their first dose of the jab.

More than 36million people have also been given their second dose, according to Public Health England (PHE) data. 

Meanwhile, Ms Churchill wrote on Twitter earlier this week that she would quarantine after being notified of Covid contact through the NHS app, and also encouraged everyone to get vaccinated.

Labour leader Keir Starmer is also isolating for the fourth time after one of his children tested positive for coronavirus. 

It comes after Speaker Lindsay Hoyle lambasted ministers over the disheveled manner in which news of the NHS pay deal was announced. 

He hit out at Mr Javid for making the announcement ‘from his garden,’ and dismissed excuses for the casual announcement that the Health Secretary was isolating. 

Sir Lindsay said: 'It's not my fault the Secretary of State [Sajid Javid] got pinged. But if he does want to make announcements from his garden, somebody could have been here, the minister could have shared that information with us.'
