HOME RUN

Mum completely transforms ‘old-fashioned’ 1930s home with Homebase & eBay bargains – and it’s added £100k to its value

WHEN you move into a new place, chances are it probably won't be done quite to your taste - but that's all part of turning a house into a home. Right?

Well when Naomi Pierpoint and her husband Ian bought their three-bedroom property in Lancashire 13 years ago, they certainly had their work cut out.

The 1930's house - which was covered in floral wallpaper and dated patterned carpets - was in desperate need of a makeover.

But thanks to their practical renovations and Naomi's chic interior taste, the couple have added a whopping £100k to their property's value.

To begin with, the couple spent £13,000 doing major renovation work - including knocking down the connecting wall between their dining room and kitchen to make an open-plan space.

The pair spent £3,000 on a new Homebase kitchen and replaced the wooden bay windows in the living room and master bedroom for double glazed UPVC windows for another £2,000.

Naomi said: "We completed most of the work ourselves with help from our friends that are in the trade, this helped to cut the cost, we didn't mind getting our hands dirty."

In 2016, the couple made the hotel bathroom of their dreams by shopping the sale sections of different websites - and kitted out the room for £500.

She explained: "We found items in sales from separate companies and this helped cut the cost dramatically.

“We opted for shower wall panels on three walls as it's easy to maintain and keep clean instead of tile."

Three years later, the family temporarily moved in with Ian's mother while they had an extension fitted in the loft to add two extra bedrooms.

We completed most of the work ourselves with help from our friends that are in the trade, this helped to cut the cost, we didn't mind getting our hands dirty.

After spending £40,000 on the build, Naomi cut costs by sourcing a matt black shower on eBay and a marble-effect panel from the Linda Barker range.

In her bedroom, the mum got stuck into some DIY by creating a fake chimney breast out of MDF panelling for only £30.

13 years after installing their kitchen, Naomi gave it a new lease of life ith some Wilkinson's tile paint.

Alongside this, she also converted her cream cupboards into a trendy shaker-style by adding £40 MDF panels and then painted over them with Farrow and Ball's Strong White £28 paint.

The mum said: "My last project I've just finished is upcycling my original kitchen for less than £100.

"The finished result is fab and now ties in with the rest of the house as we've changed most of the house since the kitchen was fitted."

What's more, the couple have slowly been converting their conservatory into a playroom for their three children Ava, 10, Joel, 8, and Evan, 2.

She added: "I'm so in love with this home and won't be moving for a long, long time.

"We've gone from a dated three-bedroom semi to a spacious modern five-bedroom, three reception rooms and two-bathroom house.

"I'm so proud of how far we've come in this renovation and the house is now worth around £230,000.”“My tips and advice for home renovation are to first get quotes for any major work that needs doing as prices can vary so much."

In terms of staying ahead of trends, the mum recommends sticking to a neutral palette and adding in statement pieces.

She explained: "You add character and colours in your accessories, doing this makes things easier if you fancy a change, as simple as changing your throw pillow can completely change the style of a room. I like to change with the seasons."
