Manchester United confirm Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has signed a new deal that will see him stay at the club until 2024 with the option for a further year... as he targets first piece of silverware as boss

Manchester United have confirmed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has signed a new contract to extend his stay as manager at Old Trafford. 

The Norwegian has signed a deal which will take him through until at least 2024, with an option of a further year. 

Solskjaer was appointed on a caretaker basis to replace Jose Mourinho in December 2018 before he was made permanent manager in March 2019 on a three-year deal. 

'Everyone knows the feeling I have for this club, and I am delighted to have signed this new contract. It is an exciting time for Manchester United, we have built a squad with a good balance of youth and experienced players that are hungry for success,' the United legend told their official website.

'I have a fantastic coaching team around me, and we are all ready to take that next step on our journey. Manchester United wants to be winning the biggest and best trophies and that's what we are all striving for. We have improved, both on and off the pitch, and that will continue over the coming seasons.

'I can't wait to get out in front of a packed Old Trafford and get this campaign started.'

Though Solskjaer is yet to win a trophy during his reign as manager at United, the club have improved year-on-year since his appointment. 

They just had their best season under the Norwegian, finishing second in the league, their highest placing since the 2017-18 season.

The club also made the final of the Europa League but suffered a shock 1-0 defeat by Spanish side Villarreal. 

United are looking to take the next step this season and mount a challenge for the Premier League title, which they haven't won since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013. 

They have already strengthened the squad this summer with the long-awaited addition of Jadon Sancho.

The English winger was announced as a United player after completing a £73million move from Borussia Dortmund. 

Solskjaer is hoping the club can make further business this summer, with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane strongly linked. 

It has been reported that the Spanish giants are hoping to secure £50m for the player that is out of contract next summer, though United are looking to push that fee down.

If Solskjaer reaches the end of his deal and takes the option of a further year, he will have been manager of the club for six-and-a-half seasons.

The 48-year-old was previously a player at the club from 1996 and 2007, famously scoring the winner which sealed their late 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final.
