CAPTAIN TOM

Troy Deeney’s name spelt WRONG in Watford teamsheet gaffe as Hornets take on West Brom in pre-season friendly

TROY DEENEY's name was spelt incorrectly in the teamsheet of Watford's pre-season friendly clash against West Brom.

The SunSport columnist has been at Watford for 11 years but that did not prevent the gaffe.

Troy became Tom in an honest error, probably made because Tom Cleverley was named above him in the teamsheet.

But fortunately for Watford they did not make the same mistake with the name on the back of the striker's shirt.

There have been several examples of misspelt names, with Zlatan Ibrahimovich a victim of exactly that while at LA Galaxy.

Chelsea and Italy star Jorginho was also let down by the kitman during a Uefa Super Cup match in 2019 - and David Beckham once played for Manchester United with the 'h' missing on the back of his shirt.

That is nothing compared to poor Romelu Lukaku however, whose name was wrongly spelt on an award he was given at the Dubai Sports Conference in 2019; his name was spelt "Romello Lukaku".

Deeney has been Watford captain since 2014 and it appears he could be set for a big role this season after leading the side out at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

His impact was limited to just 17 league appearances last term due to problems with his knee and an Achilles injury.

But Deeney did manage to score nine goals and he will be eager to prove himself in the Premier League once again following the Hornets' promotion.

He was joined in the starting lineup on Saturday by new signing Peter Etebo, who arrived from Stoke earlier this month.

But wanted man Will Hughes was absent from the squad amid speculation linking the midfielder with a move to Newcastle.
