Jersey of Erick Aguirre had flag of Mexico displayed upside-down during Olympics opener vs. France

Mexico had a fantastic start to in the men's soccer competition at the Olympics in Tokyo, defeating France 4-1 in its group stage opener Thursday.

However, the victory was overshadowed by an unfortunate uniform mistake on the jersey of midfielder Erick Aguirre, whose shirt displayed the Mexican flag upside-down. Television cameras caught the mistake during the pregame playing of the national anthems, as soccer players traditionally stand in a line for the anthem's playing during international competitions.

Aguirre switched to a corrected uniform at halftime.

That uniform mistake might bring a disciplinary measure from Mexico's government against the Mexican Olympic Committee or the apparel company, Li-Ning, according to ESPN.

Aguirre posted images to his Instagram account that showed the upside-down Mexican flag.

Aguirre, 24, plays professionally for Liga MX club Monterrey and has earned nine caps for the Mexico senior national team, debuting on Sept. 11, 2018 in a 1-0 loss to the United States in a friendly match at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.

Mexico's next Olympic group stage game is against Japan on Sunday (7 a.m. ET).
