Kansas coach Bill Self announced Friday that he tested positive for COVID-19.

Self said he initially tested positive on Thursday.

Self said he was planning to spend the weekend recruiting but got tested for the virus after experiencing “some minor symptoms.”

“That’s when I learned my results came back positive, and a second test today confirmed that,” Self said in a statement. “I am fully vaccinated and feeling pretty good right now.”

Self went on to encourage others to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

“If you have not, please get vaccinated so we don’t have to worry about this virus continuing to affect our communities and loved ones,” he said. “I fully believe I would be in a much worse condition if not for the vaccine.”

Self, 58, is entering his 19th season leading the Jayhawks. He is 522-118 at Kansas and 729-223 all-time in 28 seasons as a head coach. Kansas won the 2008 national championship under Self.

Self also coached Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois.

COVID-19 vaccines have widely been proven to be effective, though they do not give vaccinated people 100 percent immunity. A clinical trial of more than 40,000 people who received the Pfizer vaccine found it to be 95 percent effective in protecting them from symptomatic COVID-19.

And 99.2 percent of all new COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. were unvaccinated people, a news analysis of government data showed.
