Weather forecast: Weekend snow could impact travel around Rochester

Friday is partly cloudy with temperatures in the 20s and low 30s.

A large nor’easter is headed to the southeastern part of New York State and will cause problems for many across the eastern seaboard. Snow and ice will fall along the Appalachians while we anticipate half a foot of snow around Albany and into southern New England. For Western New York, we lie on the western fringes of this system. Expect snow to begin in the afternoon and last through midnight, falling as light snow and struggling to accumulate.

Rochester and along Lake Ontario can expect around an inch or so by early Sunday while those at higher elevations in the Finger Lakes will get closer to 2-3″. There will be some lingering snow showers into Sunday, but no more accumulation expected.

Models keep us busy going into next week. A large storm system right on the heels of this weekend nor’easter will move through New York State, this time carving a path potentially right through New York State. This would lead to a mess of rain, snow, ice, and wind around Monroe County. Precipitation type looks to be primarily rain as the trend has been a bit northerly for the storm track.

Once this system passes, the longer range outlook seems to be closer to average with more snow chances going into next weekend.
