The Arizona Coyotes acquired defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere along with second- and seventh-round picks in the 2022 NHL Draft from the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.

Gostisbehere, 28, carries a cap hit of $4.5 million for the next two seasons, and the cap-strapped Flyers needed to shed his salary. If they are receiving any compensation, it wasn’t announced.

“This was a difficult decision but one we thought was necessary given the reality of the salary cap,” Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said. “Shayne has been a quality player for this organization since the moment he arrived in Philadelphia and has been a part of many special moments in his seven seasons as a Flyer.”

Gostisbehere recorded 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in 41 games in 2020-21. He has 219 points (60 goals, 159 assists) and 129 penalty minutes in 381 games with the Flyers since they drafted him in the third round in 2012.

“We are very pleased to acquire Shayne,” Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong said. “He is a very good offensive defenseman and an excellent skater. He will be a solid addition to our blueline this season and will be a key power play player for us.”

Gostisbehere finished second in the Calder Trophy voting for rookie of the Year in 2015-16. He set a career high with 17 goals that season and posted career highs in assists (52) and points (65) in 2017-18.
