Courteney Cox on ‘Friends: The Reunion’ recognition: ‘That’s not exactly the Emmy I was looking for’

Courteney Cox admitted to Howard Stern last month it “always hurt” that she was the only one of the six core Friends stars not to receive an Emmy nomination.

Well, she was recognized alongside her former ensemble for Friends: The Reunion when nominees were unveiled last Tuesday (July 13) for the forthcoming 73rd Primetime Emmys. The unscripted HBO Max special earned four nods, including variety special (pre-recorded).

“Honestly, I am so happy that the reunion has been recognized because I think it's terrific," Cox told Entertainment Weekly. “Ben Winston did a great job and all of his crew." 

"That's not exactly the Emmy I was looking for,” she continued. “I'm being honest with you."

Winston was the director of the reunion, which brought together Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer for just the second time overall and first time specifically at Stage 24 since Friends wrapped its iconic 10-season run in May 2004.

Friends: The Reunion dropped exclusively to HBO Max on May 27.

"I'm so happy to be a part of it," the 57-year-old actress added. “I'm so thrilled that I got to do it onstage back at that same studio, the same Stage 24, with those incredible people that I love so much. And I'm so thrilled, but that Emmy [nomination] really belongs to Ben Winston. So yes, I'm so happy. But when I was on Howard Stern, I wasn't talking about that."

Cox is far removed from needing validation from Friends. In fact, her latest power move is directing Brandi Carlile’s new music video for “Right On Time,” the lead single of her forthcoming album In These Silent Days (Oct. 1).

As far as award recognition goes, Cox was nominated for a Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe for her work on Cougar Town (2009-15).

The 73rd Primetime Emmys are slated for Sept. 19. Cedric the Entertainer will host, and the ceremony will air live on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. EST.
