Justin Fields speaks out on current Ohio State quarterback battle

Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields might be honing his craft and preparing for life as an NFL signal-caller with the Chicago Bears, but he was back in Ohio helping run a youth football camp last weekend.

The Columbus Dispatch took the opportunity to speak to the former Heisman finalist to get his thoughts (subscription may be required) on several topics, but one, in particular, caught our eye. Bill Rabinowitz touched on the current Buckeye quarterback battle and asked Fields his thoughts on the race. Remember, Fields was a part of a QB battle when he arrived as a transfer from Georgia. He ultimately won that competition, but it gives him some keen insight into such a hot topic.

According to Fields, all three guys — CJ Stroud, Jack Miller and Kyle McCord bring a little something different to the table.

“I know coach Day is going to have a tough decision when he’s choosing his starting quarterback,” Fields said. “They’re all great, so it should be fun.

“CJ, he has a big body (and) strong arm. Jack, he throws a great ball. I haven’t seen much of Kyle, of course, because I wasn’t here with Kyle. But I’ve heard he’s a hard worker. I’ve heard he’s a dawg. So I’m excited for all of them.”

Fields drew on his experience again when asked about how to best go through such an anticipated competition. According to him, it’s about trusting the process and controlling what each can.

“Just trust the process,” he said. “Control what they can and keep working. No matter who wins the starting job, anything can happen. It takes one play for them to be the guy up next.”
