U.S. Border Patrol agents discover five undocumented migrants hiding inside a rental truck during a highway inspection near US-Mexico border in Texas

• U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced five migrants were detained after they were found hiding inside a truck in Laredo, Texas, on Monday
• The individuals were being smuggled in a tractor-trailer when the vehicle was stopped on US Highway 35 north of Laredo on Monday
• X-rays detected the individuals - all natives of Mexico - hiding behind a set of storage boxes
• The migrants were taken into custody and processed. DailyMail.com could not confirm if they were immediately expelled to Mexico 

At least five migrants were found hiding inside a rental truck during a roadside inspection near the United States-Mexico border in Texas, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced.

Agents from U.S. Border Patrol's Laredo Sector on Monday night checked a tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 35 north of Laredo, Texas, and detected anomalies in the cargo area.

The U.S. Border Patrol agents X-rayed the truck and freight container and spotted five migrants - all natives from Mexico - crowded behind storage boxes. 

According to Deputy Chief Carl Landrum, 87 grams of marijuana was seized from the cab. 

DailyMail.com could not confirm if the migrants were immediately expelled to Mexico and if the driver was arrested.

'Human smugglers continue to have no regard for the safety and health of the people they exploit as they are treated like a commodity for profit. Vehicles such as box trucks are increasingly being used when trying to circumvent checkpoints to violate the immigration laws of the (United States),' CBP said in a statement. 'Laredo Sector agents focus on the agency's enduring mission priorities of countering terrorism, combatting transnational crime, securing the border, facilitating lawful trade and travel, and protecting revenue.' 

Data provided to DailyMail.com by U.S. Custom and Border Protection's Laredo Sector Border Patrol shows that arrests of undocumented migrants being smuggled in trucks has nearly tripled during the current fiscal year. 

Laredo Sector agents assigned to various highway checkpoint in Texas had apprehended 6,592 people as of Tuesday. The current fiscal year runs from October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021. 

In comparison, the border officers detained 2,300 migrants in the prior fiscal year. 

The Laredo Sector is responsible for 136 southwest border miles along the Rio Grande River between Mexico and the United States. 

Laredo Sector agents are in charge of the 'busiest' checkpoint in the country and inspect '10,000 to 12,000 vehicles.' The route is used by criminal organizations to smuggle migrants directly from Mexico or from Laredo to the rest of the nation.

'They try to disguise themselves through heavy traffic here,' Laredo Sector North Station Patrol Agent in Charge Jaime Fierro recently told DailyMail.com. 'Hence it's easy to mingle within the traffic and exploit that. We're looking at approximately 10,000 to 12,000 vehicles traversing through this checkpoint on a daily basis - 65 percent of that being commercial trucks. So we're looking for a needle in a haystack.' 

CBP's last monthly report showed U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped 188,829 individuals attempting to cross into the United States along the southwest border region in June, a five percent increase from May when 180,034 migrants were encountered.
