Yadkin County school bus driver charged, suspended after bus overturns with students inside
The driver of a school bus that overturned in Yadkin County on Wednesday afternoon while students were inside has been charged, North Carolina State Highway Patrol says.
The bus went off Rena Road and down an embankment, said J.W. Baity with the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Baity said 26 people were on the bus when it flipped on its side.
The driver of the bus, Benjamin Houser, 28, ran off the road, overcorrected and crossed the center line before the bus flipped. Houser has been charged with failure to maintain lane, said NCSHP Trooper Ned Moultrie.
Yadkin County Schools said Houser, has now been suspended pending an investigation from the district and from law enforcement.
Four students were taken to the hospital with injuries as a precaution.
One student stayed in the hospital overnight with a broken collarbone, according to Yadkin County Schools.
Kay Collins lives nearby and said she usually hears the bus pass her home. She said she happened to be at the door and saw the bus go off the road. She said she ran out and heard children screaming and crying and called 911.
"It was terrible," she said. "I just hope and pray that the kids are all right. That's all I can say, I didn't know what to do. I called 911."
She said accidents along this stretch of road are too common but that she had never seen a school bus crash. She said she thinks there needs to be a sign indicating the curve on the road.
Yadkin County Schools Superintendent Todd Martin said the driver of the bus was a district employee. He said students onboard were from Jonesville Elementary and in kindergarten through fifth grade. Four students, he said, were taken to Brenner Children's Hospital with injuries.
“We were very fortunate," he said.
While most of the students are okay, many were upset by the incident, Martin said. He said he rushed to the scene as soon as he heard what had happened. He said many other district staff members did, too.
"What was great to see was so many school personnel who just showed up on their own to sit and talk with the kids and keep them calm while they were being tended to by the emergency services personnel. They were there, some were very scared and crying and they were there to wipe their tears and take care of them," Martin said.

Students' parents picked them up from the scene. Students whose parents were unable to pick them up were transported on a different bus, officials said.
No other vehicles were involved.
