1 dead as SUV, 3 trucks collide on I-10 in Luna County

DEMING, New Mexico -- A truck driver was killed in a four-vehicle crash that shut down a stretch of Interstate 10 westbound for over 17 hours Wednesday in Luna County between Deming and Las Cruces, according to New Mexico State Police.

The deadly wreck, involving three semi-trucks and an SUV, happened about 11 p.m. Tuesday on I-10 west near milepost 105, which is east of Deming and west of Las Cruces.

Police detoured westbound traffic off the interstate at exit 116, which is NM 549, into Wednesday afternoon as investigators thoroughly examined the crash scene. Authorities indicated they reopened the highway about 4:45 p.m.

NMSP said it appeared the SUV blew a tire and was struck by a big-rig, which overturned. That flipped-over truck was then struck by two other tractor-trailer rigs.

The Office of Medical Investigator said the driver of the overturned semi-truck, 37-year-old Daniel Quintana of Las Cruces, died at the scene. The drivers of the other two trucks along with the driver and passengers in the SUV weren't injured.
