Manchester United and Chelsea have been told they have missed out on Ben White this summer.

It comes as the England international prepares to leave Brighton in a £50m deal that has been agreed with Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta is splashing the cash this summer and already has signed two players in the shape of Nuno Tavares and Albert Sangi Lokonga.

But one area that the Spaniard has been desperate to bolster is in defence with White being his top target.

After the departure of David Luiz, it has left Arsenal light in their backline while the Englishman has been chased by some of the biggest teams in the Premier League.

And former Liverpool star Danny Murphy believes that the likes of United and Chelsea have missed a trick by not landing the 23-year-old.

"Ultimately, as a player, you can only make a decision based on the opportunity in front of you," he told talkSPORT.

"If I’m Ben White, I’m going to Arsenal, because they are the ones after me and it’s a step up, it’s a huge club.

"Yes, it’s a risk in terms of will they progress from last season and can Mikel Arteta improve that squad? But he’s obviously sold him that and he feels wanted.

"It’s a massive opportunity because he will play every week, it’s a great environment to play your football and a better environment than Brighton.

"Is it a progression in his career? Yes it is. It’s easy to look at last season and think Arsenal won’t be competitive. But they could get into the top-four next season.

"You can only move to a club that wants you. I agree that his quality and potential is really good and I’m surprised that Manchester United or Chelsea haven’t come in for him."

After finishing eighth in the Premier League, Arsenal are without European football for the first time in 25 years.

But that has not stopped Arteta from overhauling his squad with several players being shipped out.

William Saliba and Matteo Guendouzi have also left this summer on loan to Marseille while the likes of Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira are being primed for departures.

The Gunners are keen to revitalise their interest in Lyon star Houssem Aouar, but they face a battle to sign the midfielder.

United, Tottenham and Liverpool are also keen on the France international - who has been priced at £25m.
