Apple is set to release an updated MacBook Pro later this year with 10,000 mini-LED backlights that will make colors brighter and consume less power

With Apple looking to cash in on surging sales of its Mac computers thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tech giant will reportedly give the MacBook Pro a big boost.

The new laptop, set to be released between September and November, will have a screen that uses 10,000 mini-LEDs to allow a higher brightness, deeper blacks and localized backlighting, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the news.

The new screen, which Apple refers to as Liquid Retina XDR display, is already available on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, released in April

Bloomberg reported that the new laptops were supposed to be available earlier, 'but complications around the new miniLED display have held up production.'

The new MacBook Pro would also use less power, thanks to running on a variant of Apple's M1 chip, believed to be known as the M1X.

The new M1X chip is more powerful and faster than the current M1 chip, which powers the new iPads, as well as a number of different Macs in Apple's lineup.

The new chip could have 10-cores, eight for high-performance needs and two that are energy-efficient for tasks such as web browsing. 

The current M1 chips have eight-cores, four of which are high-performance and four that are energy efficient. 

Cupertino, California-based Apple is currently in the process of transitioning its entire Mac lineup to chips designed by Apple, whereas it had previously used those designed and made by Intel. 

The 13-inch MacBook Pro, which runs on the M1 chip, has a battery capacity of up to 17 hours, depending upon usage.

The 16-inch version, which still runs on Intel chips, has a battery capacity of up to 11 hours, depending upon usage. 

The M1 chips have lower power needs than Intel processors, which Apple had used in its computers for more than 15 years.

As a result, Mac computers are now capable of running same apps as its mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad.

Led by CEO Tim Cook, Apple has seen a resurgence in Mac sales during the past 12 months as many employees work from home during the pandemic, resulting in a new for new equipment.

In the company's most recent quarter, Mac revenue reached an 'all-time high' according to the company, clocking in at $9.1 billion, up 168 percent year-over-year.

That accounted for nearly 10 percent of the company's total quarterly revenue during the period.
