After turning into a surprising MVP candidate in 2020, Yastrzemski has experienced his share of ups and downs this season. The grandson of Hall of Famer and Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski -- who was taken in the 14th round by the Orioles in the 2013 draft but never debuted in Baltimore -- is batting .234 with an .803 OPS, 12 home runs and 34 RBIs but has dealt with injuries along the way. He's been hot of late, a welcome sight for the surprising NL West leaders.

    Alex Gallardo/AP

In the final year of a $57 million deal he signed with the Orioles just before the 2018 season, Cobb, who was traded in February for heralded infield prospect Jahmai Jones, has been solid for the Angels. He's 6-3 with a 4.23 ERA while striking out a career-high 10.1 batters per nine innings, with a Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) -- a stat that measures a pitcher's effectiveness at limiting home runs and walks and causing strikeouts -- of 2.60 indicating he's been better than his ERA might suggest. His 13 starts through the first half equal the total he had with the Orioles the past two seasons.

    David Zalubowski/AP

Hader, a 19th-round pick by the Orioles in 2012 out of Old Mill who was later traded to the Houston Astros and then the Brewers, is putting together the best season of his young career, even though he's struggled of late. The 27-year-old has a 1.49 ERA in 37 appearances with 21 saves and 15.6 strikeouts per nine innings, earning his third All-Star selection. He entered the break in a slump, having blown his first save of the season against the Mets on July 7 before surrendering the lead in back-to-back games against the Reds to close the first half.

    Nick Wass/AP

Gausman's ascent this season has been just as surprising as his team's rise to the top of the National League. After rediscovering his form in 2020 with San Francisco, the former No. 4 overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Orioles has become a bona fide star, going 9-3 with a 1.73 ERA in 18 starts to earn his first All-Star nod. There's a good chance the 30-year-old will be in the Cy Young conversation this year, which might also include a deep postseason run.

There’s no reset button when it comes to the Orioles pitching staff. Day game after a night game or four days off, the struggles continue apace.

Rookie left-hander Keegan Akin was hit hard and often as the Orioles opened the second half of the season with a 9-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Friday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Akin, fresh from a strong relief outing before the break, allowed one run in the first inning, four in the second and another in the third to raise his ERA 8.19 in his rookie season to put the game out of reach early.

“Just poor pitch selection and didn’t miss many barrels,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “Had a tough night.”

César Valdez followed him with three shutout innings before newcomer Shaun Anderson allowed three runs in the seventh inning.

The Orioles (28-62) had six hits — a pair of singles from Cedric Mullins, and three, including a home run, by Pedro Severino.

Anthony Santander added a ninth-inning infield single.

Miss that guy

The Orioles’ infield has been a misfit collection all year, and seeing old pal Hanser Alberto for the Royals won’t make anyone feel better about that.

Alberto, one of the most productive hitters in the majors against left-handed pitchers, doubled twice against Akin and scored each time.

López could return Saturday

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said right-hander Jorge López, who was placed on the bereavement list Wednesday, was attempting to return to the team in Kansas City on Friday and would start Saturday if he’s able to.

López last pitched on July 9, and Hyde said he wanted to give him an extended rest at the All-Star break. His 18 starts are most on the team.

Norby begins draft signings

The Orioles signed second-round second baseman Connor Norby to begin the process of signing their 21 picks from this week’s MLB draft. Norby, the 41st overall pick, signed for $1.7 million, below the slot of $1.81 million recommended for the pick. The Orioles can transfer those savings on to bonuses for the other picks.
