Former President George W. Bush ripped the Biden administration’s decision to pull troops out of Afghanistan, saying locals will be put in harm’s way.
The military had completed 90% of its duties related to a troop withdrawal, it announced July 6, while Gen. Austin Scott Miller, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan, left his post Monday, and Gen. Kenneth McKenzie took over his command authorities.
“I’m afraid Afghan women and girls are going to suffer unspeakable harm” after the troops finish leaving Afghanistan on Aug. 31, Bush said Wednesday on DW News. “It’s unbelievable how that society changed from the brutality of the Taliban.”

The U.S. withdrawal is a mistake, and “the consequences are going to be unbelievably bad,” Bush said.
Biden, in his announcement about the moved up date of the troops’ withdrawal, pushed back on claims such as Bush’s, explaining that the U.S. has given Afghans “all the tools” they need to fend off the Taliban, though some allies and partners have expressed doubts.

U.S. forces left Bagram Air Base earlier in July, once the headquarters for the Afghanistan operation. About 650 troops will remain behind, mostly to help secure the U.S. Embassy in Kabul.
