A woman injured in a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of the driver is recovering after being found by a Good Samaritan over 12 hours later.

A witness reported to troopers that he heard a loud crash while in his home and left to try and found the source of the sound, but couldn’t find it. He went out again just after noon Sunday to check the area again and heard a woman shouting for help.

Georgia State Patrol says that two people were driving down Old Cornelia Highway at 11:45 p.m. Saturday night when their car left the road and struck a tree, causing them to overturn. The car then fell down a 50-foot embankment and landed on its roof.

He was able to locate the car and contact GSP.

The driver of the car, 27-year-old Connor William Wales, of Forsyth, was taken to Northeast Georgia Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The passenger, a 22-year-old Gainesville woman, was taken to the same hospital and is being treated for her injuries. Her condition is unknown at this time.

GSP officials say the cause of the crash is still being investigated, but Wales is suspected of having drugs and alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.
