Things to do in the Bay: Dandelion exhibit, Oakland Nutcracker
Things are constantly evolving with the coronavirus pandemic but one thing is certain - there are still plenty of fun and safe activities that you and your family can do in the Bay Area to make it a better weekend.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The state of the pandemic is always changing-but one thing is certain. There are still plenty of safe and fun activities that you and your family can do to create a "better weekend." Jobina Fortson has a list of events happening where you live.

Weekend of December 17 - 19

Acclaimed Tokyo-based artist Ryotaro Muramatsu is bringing his interactive DANDELION exhibit to San Francisco's Japantown -- its first U.S. location! The installation encourages visitors to make a wish for peace and 'blow' upon the dandelion. Then the seeds float to another dandelion installed in a different location and produce a flower there. Because of COVID-19, participants will use their smartphone to send their seeds, rather than actually blowing. Visitors can also create a virtual dandelion seed with their name on it. Admission is free, but attendees are invited to donate to the Heart of Jtown Resiliency Fund.

The Nutcracker is a holiday staple, and this year, it's returning to the Oakland Ballet for the first in-person performance since the pandemic. There are three shows, this weekend only, at the Paramount Theatre. Performances include 20 professional dancers, 40 local students, the Oakland Symphony and the East Bay Oakland Children's Choir. They're pulling out all the stops!

Finally, celebrate the band's 40th anniversary with the Metallica takeover weekend in San Francisco! There are all sorts of ticketed and free events happening this weekend from a beach clean up to a film fest and of course a show at Chase Center.

Event availability may be subject to change. Always be sure to check the event's official website before planning your weekend!
