Restaurateur Frank Scibelli dishes up Latin cuisine with latest venture

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Veteran restaurateur Frank Scibelli is bringing the flavors of Latin America to Plaza Midwood. His new venture Calle Sol Latin Cafe opens for dinner service at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

That 100-seat restaurant is at 1205 Thomas Ave — once home to The Penguin Drive-In, followed by other concepts in recent years. It was most recently Chef Bruce Moffett’s NC Red. Scibelli’s FS Food Group purchased a majority ownership in that venture to create Calle Sol.

Expect Calle Sol to dish up a menu that boasts classic dishes from Cuba to Peru, with touches from Latin America. The restaurant is also home to Charlotte’s first Cevicheria.
