Blair Underwood's wife of 27 years Desiree DaCosta files for divorce from L.A. Law star a month after couple announced end of their marriage

L.A. Law star Blair Underwood and his wife of 27 years Desiree DaCosta announced a month ago that they are ending their marriage.

And on Tuesday, DaCosta officially filed for divorce from the actor, 56, with whom she shares three children, TheBlast.com reported.

Underwood, who is best known for his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins in LA Law, wed DaCosta in 1994, the same year the hit legal drama came to and end after eight seasons.

On May 31, the couple had surprised fans with a joint announcement that they were separating.

In a lengthy message shared via Instagram, they said they would remain the 'best of friends' and continue to focus on their children - Blake, 20, Brielle, 22, and Paris, 24. 

Their statement read: 'After a tremendous amount of thought, prayer & work on ourselves individually & collectively, we have come to the conclusion to end our marriage that began 27 years ago.' 

They continued: 'Our proudest achievements are our three children. Three souls to which God entrusted us. We continue to be awed & humbled by the blessings of parenting.

'We have always put their best interests first & will continue to do so. We will continue to be the best of friends and co-parents and have the utmost respect for one another as we embark on this new chapter of our lives, separately.

Blair went on to thank his fans for their 'support throughout the years' and asked for 'privacy and understanding during this new season of change.' 

While reflecting on his parent's decades-long marriage back in 2008, he said they are his 'heroes in love' and taught him relationships can be 'enduring and powerful.'

'My parents have been married for 48 years. They are my heroes in love, and they've taught me what a relationship can be—enduring and powerful,' he said in an interview with Oprah.com. 

After growing up watching his dad serve as their family's breadwinner, while his mom nurtured them, Underwood said he 'wanted to be her [DaCosta's] rock, her protector.'

'If she had a problem, I wanted to solve it. I thought that's what was expected of me,' he told the outlet, before having an honest conversation with DaCosta. 

His wife ultimately told him that she didn't need him to fix all her problems, but simply listen when she vented. 

'Trying to come up with ways to solve her problems gave me a false sense of control, and when I offered up unsolicited advice, I was disrespecting a strong woman who knew how to handle her own life,' he reflected. 

The star concluded: 'I was relieved as well; she didn't expect me to always have an answer for her. She wasn't coming to me for a repair.'
