NFL Draft 2021 Review: Jacksonville Jaguars

    2021-06-22

The Jacksonville Jaguars appeared to be on the right track after winning their first game of the 2020 season against the Indianapolis Colts. However, the Jaguars were the Jags for the rest of the season by losing the next fifteen to finish with a regular season record of 1-15.

Last season had to be so deflating for Jacksonville fans because they defeated a legitimate playoff contender in their first game, but they could not pull of a victory even against the other sorry teams in the National Football League (NFL).

The Jaguars lost six of their fifteen games by eight points or less, so there is some hope for this season because they received the #1 pick in the NFL Draft in a year in which there is no question who the number one pick should be. Here is an entire look at all of the players Jacksonville selected.

Round 1, Pick 1: Trevor Lawrence - QB - Clemson (6'6", 213 lbs). In three seasons as a starter at Clemson, Lawrence only lost two games. He did miss two games due to COVID-19, but his statistics throughout the past season were outstanding (3,153 passing yards, 24 TD, 5 INT, 8 rushing TD). The most important part about his game is that he does not commit that many unforced errors on the field. He will start right away.

Round 1, Pick 25: Travis Etienne - RB - Clemson (5'10", 215 lbs). Etienne led the Tigers in rushing in all four years of his college career. He is an all-purpose running back (913 rushing yards, 14 rushing TD, 588 receiving yards, 2 receiving TD, 233 return yards). Etienne will line up all over the field and will be a good complement with current Jacksonville starting running back James Robinson.

Round 2, Pick 1: Tyson Campbell - CB - Georgia (6'1", 193 lbs). Campbell has the physical size to deal with taller receivers at the line of scrimmage. He ended up with five pass break-ups and one interception last season. He will compete for a starting spot because the Jaguars secondary was atrocious in 2020.

Round 2, Pick 13: Walker Little - OT - Stanford (6'7", 313 lbs). Little dropped into the second round due to a knee injury two years ago and also due to opting out last season. Nevertheless, he will be competing for a starting tackle spot based upon his All Pac-12 conference play two seasons ago.

Round 3, Pick 1: Andre Cisco - S - Syracuse (6'1", 216 lbs). Cisco also dropped in this draft due to a season-ending injury, but his 2019 season was tremendous (65 tackles, 5 INT, 10 pass breakups). Cisco excelled in helping out on run defense and in zone coverage. He should see some time in the Jaguars secondary as well.

Round 4, Pick 1: Jay Tufele - DT - USC (6'2", 305 lbs). Tufele opted out of the 2020 season due to the pandemic, but he had a nice 2019 season (4.5 sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss). He should definitely see some time in that defensive tackle rotation.

Round 4, Pick 16: Jordan Smith - DE - UAB (6'6", 255 lbs). Smith created pressure along the edge for UAB last season (4.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss). For now, he should see some time in pass-rushing situations at defensive end next season.

Round 5, Pick 1: Luke Farrell - TE - Ohio State (6'5 1/2", 251 lbs). Farrell will compete to see some time as a run-blocking TE for the Jaguars. The competition will be fierce after Jacksonville signed Tim Tebow in the offseason to play tight end.

Round 6, Pick 25: Jalen Camp - WR - Georgia Tech (6'2", 220 lbs). Although the Yellow Jackets went away from the triple option offense, Camp did not bring the production as expected (369 receiving yards, 4 TD). However, his size could get him on the field in red-zone situations. If he makes the team, then he will be given a chance to develop behind a deep group of wide receivers.

Grade: Fortunately, the Jaguars did not mess the #1 pick up. For that reason only, the Jaguars receive an A grade. Also, Jacksonville added depth to their secondary and to both lines.
