TULARE COUNTY, Calif. — The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office cracked a tough one recently, resulting in the arrest of a California man on suspicion of stealing more than $100,000 worth of pistachios.
A June audit revealed Touchstone Pistachio Co. was missing 42,000 pounds of its namesake nuts, and Alberto Montemayor, 34, was taken into custody Friday in connection to the theft, The Fresno Bee reported.
“The remaining pistachios were returned to the Touchstone Pistachio Company.” the sheriff’s office stated.
According to a sheriff’s department Facebook post, the hijacked pistachios were located Friday in a tractor-trailer that had been moved from Montemayor Trucking in Delano to a nearby lot, where the 2,000-pound sacks of nuts were being repackaged into smaller bags for resale.
Online commenters wasted little time pouncing on the nutty nature of the crime.
“Aw nuts, got caught …” one comment read, while another noted, “Guy must’ve been ‘nuts’ to think he could get away with it.”
