Violence, persecution and wars amid a global pandemic added to the growing number of displaced persons around the world last year.

For Wisconsin, the most frequent countries that refugees came from during the past year were the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burma, Palestine and Iraq. Between Oct. 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021, Wisconsin took in just 95 people, according to data from the U.S. Department of State. Statistics from the last 15 years show that the most common country of origin for Wisconsin refugees has been Myanmar (also known as Burma), where a military dictatorship has committed atrocities labeled as “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing” by the United Nations. This has led to many people fleeing the regime and 5,265 refugees settled in Wisconsin. Coming in second is Laos, third is Somalia and fourth is Bhutan.
