DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2021 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A “bulldog mix” jumped out of a work van in the West Delray Beach community of Seven Bridges, pouncing on a Golden Retriever being walked by a young girl. When the bulldog was done, it allegedly had punctured the Golden Retriever’s ear and tongue.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Palm Beach County Animal Control confirm the attack to BocaNewsNow.com. Both agencies responded to the scene.
According to a police report, the young girl was walking her dog, Max, on Eden Roc Court when the Bulldog jumped from a white van on around 6:20 p.m. Thursday. Police made contact with the bulldog’s owner, Robert Malmid, who “advised he was putting something into the side door of his work van. He always keeps the driver and passenger windows half way down for Morty to get air while he works. As Robert Malmid was dealing with work, Morty spotted the (young girl) and Max. Morty leaped from the passenger window of the work van and went after (the young girl) and Max before Robert Malmid separated the dogs, took Morty back to his work van (and) secured him.”
Investigating Deputies determined that “Max suffered a small puncture to his right ear and tongue, and walked with a slight limp. Max is 11 years old and Morty is a year and a half. Morty suffered minor scratches to his head. Robert Malmid advised that Morty has never attacked a person or dog before, This is his first act of aggression towards another dog.”
Capt. David Walesky told BocaNewsNow.com that there is no immediate indication that Morty is a “dangerous dog,” but that officers will now investigate the dog’s history. He said that initial reports that Morty is a dangerous pitbull are, for now, unfounded.
“It doesn’t matter what type of dog it is,” said Capt. Walesky. “All dogs have to follow the same rules.”
In Palm Beach County, that means dogs must be on a leash and must not attack other dogs or people. If investigators determine this is Morty’s first violation, owner Robert Malmid may end up with just a warning. Malmid lives on Federal Highway in Boca Raton.
“Dogs do have to be a on a leash in Palm Beach County,” said Capt. Walesky. “The dog also has to be legally registered. We’ll be looking at all of this.”
Max, the Golden Retriever, was rushed to an area veterinary hospital for treatment. Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control continues to investigate.
The girl walking Max was not injured, according to police.
