A 16-year-old rising junior at Timber Creek High School was killed over the weekend in a car crash in Alabama, according to Orange County Public Schools.

Michael “Mikey” Stroz was also a member of Timber Creek’s lacrosse team. His father and his sister, a rising freshman at Timber Creek, were also in the car, OCPS said, in a statement seeking support for the Stroz Family Fund.

Mikey’s sister, whose name was not released, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, OCPS said.

TCHS principal Kelly Paduano sent out a message Saturday notifying families of Michael’s death and informing students that grief counselors would be available Monday if they’d like to speak to someone and discuss the feelings and reactions they may have.

“There are no words to describe the intense grief that is felt when we lose one of our precious children,” she said in the message. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they go through this difficult time.”

Michael was remembered by his coach, William Gordon, as a leader with an infectious personality and work ethic.

“You always hear how impactful coaches can be in a players life, but in reality players like him impact the lives of coaches just as much,” Gordon said in a statement. “He made coaching fun and easy. His passion to get better and grow the sport was second to none. He will forever be missed but never forgotten.”

OCPS said the family will need help to travel to and from Alabama, for funeral expenses and related medical treatment. You can find information about donating to the Stroz Family Fund here.
