In a high-profile case, Roy III’s girlfriend, Michelle Carter, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for urging the 18-year-old to kill himself as he contemplated suicide.

On Sunday morning, Roy Jr. came across a Facebook post about a hard hat with a New Bedford sticker on it that had washed up on shore of the Azores, an archipelago off the Portuguese coast.

“I just happen to see this post and I’m like, ‘Wow, it looks like my hard hat,’ and I start reading it and I said, ‘Oh my gosh, that is my hard hat,’” Roy Jr. said.

Roy Jr. says he started crying because he felt like the discovery of his lost hard hat across the Atlantic Ocean was a Father’s Day gift from his late son.

“I’m happy today because it felt like he brought that to me,” he said.

Sandra Machado is the person who found the hard hat in the Azores Sunday morning and posted about it Facebook.

“I saw something right in the waves. I went to pick it up and saw a helmet, and the stickers say it was from New Bedford,” Machado said.

Machado says when she learned about the significance behind the hat, it brought her joy.

“I am happy for helping the family to have some kind of peace,” she said.

“I think my son’s story was such a negative story and just a sad story, and I think this brings a little happiness to somebody on Father’s Day,” Roy Jr. said.

Roy Jr. says he has no solid plans yet when it comes to getting his hard hat back, but he is contemplating traveling to the Azores soon to retrieve it.
