Nearly two-thirds Iowa voters think Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) should not run for reelection, according to a new poll released Saturday.
According to the poll, conducted by the Des Moines Register and Mediacom Iowa, 64 percent of respondents say they think it’s time for someone new to hold Grassley’s Senate seat.
Just 27 percent of respondents said they would vote to reelect Grassley, 87, who has served in the Senate for more than 40 years.
Eight percent said were unsure if they would vote for the Iowa senator, while 1 percent said they would not vote.
When responses were compared along party lines, 37 percent of Republicans said they think it’s time for someone else to hold the seat, compared with 89 percent of Democrats and 68 percent of independents who said the same.
Fifty-one percent of Republicans polled said they would vote to reelect Grassley. Just 7 percent of Democrats and 23 percent of independents said the same.
The latest poll comes as congressional Republicans gear up for the 2022 midterms with the goal of taking back both the House and the Senate and challenging President Biden’s legislative agenda.
Grassley has not yet said whether he will seek an eighth term in office. So far, only one Republican has mounted a challenge against him.
The poll was conducted from June 13 to June 16 among 630 participants who said they were likely to vote in the 2022 midterm elections. The margin of error for the poll was 3.9 percentage points.
