WILLIAMSBURG, Ohio — Williamsburg High School graduate Madi Ogden was named Friday morning as the Gatorade Ohio softball player of the year.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Ogden as Ohio’s best high school softball player.
She is a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year award to be announced later this month.
Ogden is the second Gatorade Ohio softball player of the year from the school, joining Carly Wagers (2017).
"To have a school to have one (Gatorade winner) is an incredible honor," said Williamsburg athletic director Rick Healey, who is the school's head softball coach.
"To have two is off the charts. I am so, so excited for (Madi). We all know her story and her story of just relentless work."

The senior right-handed pitcher compiled a 27-1 record with a 0.04 earned run average this past season, leading the Wildcats (28-1) to a Division III regional championship game.
Ogden allowed just 41 hits and 15 walks, amassing 331 strikeouts in 168.2 innings pitched. She allowed one earned run all season, firing 11 no-hitters and three perfect games.
"She is a special one for sure," Healey said.
At the plate, the two-time first team all-state selection posted a .527 batting average with six home runs, 41 runs scored, 32 runs batted in and a .849 slugging percentage.
Ogden will be in the Ohio High School Athletic Association record book for a number of categories.
In pitching, Ogden's 27 wins are on the list for most wins in a season. Her 0.04 ERA is fourth all-time for lowest earned-run average in a season.
Ogden's 12 no-hitters are second-most all-time for a season. Her five perfect games are tied for third all-time.
In 2019, Ogden set an OHSAA state record for most hits in a season (85).
She also entered the OHSAA list for most home runs in a season (15). She also hit .700 that season which is among the highest batting averages in state history.
Williamsburg (28-1), consistently ranked nationally by MaxPreps all season, was a Division III regional finalist.
Ogden has volunteered locally as a youth math and reading tutor. She has also donated her time as a youth softball and basketball coach.
Ogden has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average in the classroom and graduated as her school’s valedictorian. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball on scholarship at Morehead State University (Ky.) this fall.
The Gatorade player of the year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.
