Trump obstruction: Finish Mueller's investigation and uphold the law

USA TODAY

One of our contributors misses his father. Another hopes Juneteenth can help a community heal and our newest columnist shows that nature can help tell a family's story. Oh, and another contributor says it's time to finish what the Mueller report started.

Let's go.

Investigate Trump for obstruction of justice

A recent legal decision and partially released memo make clear what we have long known: Attorney General William Barr’s primary mission as head of the Department of Justice was to prevent President Donald Trump from facing consequences for his actions, no matter what the special counsel or anyone else uncovered.

Now that we know the truth, it’s time for that all to change. And it’s time for prosecutors to finish the investigation into Trump’s obstruction.

A Father's Day love story

Patrick John challenged his son to continually grow personally and to never make excuses. When presented with the opportunity to join the band, he encouraged his son to go for it and did everything imaginable to support that effort.

He worked the night shift so he could attend class with Patrick and take notes. He took him to daily marching band practice, learned all the steps and pushed his son’s wheelchair so Patrick could march with the rest of the band.

In other words: Patrick John loved his son.

A backyard of love and second chances

USA TODAY Columnist Connie Schultz writes about how a backyard can tell the story of a family's love.

"This yard of trees is our map, perhaps, for our grandchildren. It is a story of love and resilience that began with a marriage of second chances and grew into our version of a family tree."

Juneteenth should mean safety from police violence

Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., writes about what Juneteenth means to her and should mean to the country

"This Juneteenth, I invite you to reflect on the promise of freedom. Freedom doesn't simply mean freedom from enslavement. Freedom is an affirmative goal, it is one that promises liberation, safety and peace of mind. It is the promise of a full and prosperous life. Yet, Black communities are still denied basic human rights protections. From the moment the first slave ships landed in 1619 to present day, Black communities have been denied basic lifesaving resources, locking us into cyclical trauma and violence."
