BBQ Pitmaster Matt Horn set to rain down deliciousness on West Oakland with Kowbird
(OAKLAND, Calif.) Purveyor of West Oakland’s Horn Barbecue, Matt Horn, is setting his sights on burgers and fried chicken after announcing the planned opening of Kowbird this summer in West Oakland, East Bay Times reports.
Known for his acclaimed Central Texas-style barbecue restaurant that opened in September, Horn announced that Kowbird would open up shop a few doors down from his other restaurant, Horn Barbeque.
Kowbird was originally slated to open at Oakland Assembly at the Jack London Square food hall but will now be located at 1733 Peralta Street.
Horn says that Kowbird will focus on fried chicken sandwiches that have been specially-brined, featuring “wildly inventive sauces.” In addition, the Kowbird menu also includes southern specialties such as collard greens, fried giblets and southern-style cakes.
“Fried chicken is a part of American culture,” Horn told S.F. Eater. “Chicken is chicken. But I wanted to put my touch on it.”
Kowbird will also offer fried chicken by the piece or by the quarter-bird as well as chicken wings.
Horn’s mission, he says, is to stick to the fundamentals in crafting a chicken sandwich that is more memorable and that will outlast the passing food fads. “I try to keep things really simple, but then execute it at a high level,” Horn said.
According to reps from Horn Hospitality Group, Horn also plans to open Matty’s Old Fashioned, a classic-style burger joint, around the same time Kowbird is scheduled to open in mid-summer. Diners can look forward to the dry-aged double-patty burger made with Horn’s preparatory blend, caramelized onions, cheese and a special sauce.
The menu at Matty’s Old Fashioned will also include craft-made hotdogs, milkshakes and even specialty cocktails created by Horn himself.
Matty’s Old Fashioned will be located at 464 Eighth St. in Old Oakland.
