Data On Fatalities In 2020 Car Crashes Prompts Big Rapids Police To Take Action On Roads

A disturbing trend is prompting law enforcement to take action on the roads.

During the pandemic, data has shown that while a number of car crashes had decreased in 2020, the number of fatalities in relation to car crashes has gone up.

This has prompted county, city and campus law enforcement in Big Rapids to join forces with 30 other jurisdictions in the state as part of the Great Lakes, High Stake campaign to spread awareness of the dangers of speeding.

“How speed relates to fatalities and how to drive safe. It’s more of an education than anything else,” said Sgt. Ryan Myers of the Big Rapids Police Department. “The faster you go, the longer it takes to stop.”

In 2020, the amount of crashes went down by 22%, while fatalities increased by 10%
