City of Palatka goes dark after crane hits power lines being transported by barge on St. Johns

Palatka, Fla. — Putnam County officials announced the city of Palatka last power Thursday morning after a crane being transported by barge struck power lines that cross the St. Johns River.

Putnam County officials said the widespread outage occurred around 9:30 a.m. and the majority of power was restored within the hour, but Florida Power and Light customers may still experience rolling outages through the afternoon while power is rerouted from other substations.

Officials say any future outages are not expected to last longer than an hour and FPL does not anticipate outages continuing into Friday.

Officials say all boat traffic is prohibited from the Palatka City Docks to Browns Landing while crews work to get the lines grounded.

Crill Avenue will reportedly be closed starting at 1 p.m. from South State Road 19 to South Palm Avenue. The city asks residents to anticipate an increase in law enforcement in this area helping to direct traffic.
