SECAUCUS, N.J. — Freshpet Inc. is voluntarily recalling a single lot of its Select Small Dog Bite Size Beef & Egg Recipe Dog Food amid concerns of potential salmonella contamination.
According to the recall notice, issued jointly by the Secaucus, New Jersey-based company and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, on Sunday the lot of 1-pound bags with a sell-by date of Oct. 30, 2021, had been designated for destruction but was “inadvertently shipped to retailers in limited geographic markets” between June 7 and June 10.
The products may have been sold at Publix locations in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida as well as Target locations in Arizona and southern California, WSB-TV reported.
Although the lion’s share of the affected products was intercepted at retailer distribution warehouses, an undisclosed number of potentially contaminated products made their way to retailers, the company stated.
“No other Freshpet products or lot codes are impacted by this recall,” the company stated, noting the affected products have UPC code 627975012939 and lot code 1421FBP0101.
Freshpet confirmed it has received no illness, injury or adverse reaction reports linked to the recall, but owners can request a refund on the company’s website.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, common symptoms associated with salmonella in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.
Dogs with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting, according to the recall notice. Some dogs will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy dogs can be carriers and infect other animals or humans, WSB-TV reported.
