Pennsylvania coronavirus update: Nearly a third of counties report no new cases, hospitalizations continue to decline

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 312 additional coronavirus cases Wednesday. The seven-day moving average of newly reported cases was 359, down 28% from 499 a week ago.

To date, there have been 1.21 million infections statewide since the start of the pandemic.

The number of new cases reported each day has continued to decline across Pennsylvania with 19 counties, primarily in the central and northwestern parts of the state, reporting no new cases Wednesday. Only nine counties reported more than 10 new cases.

Vaccinations

Data combined from the state Health Department, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health show that nearly 7.8 million Pennsylvanians have received at least one of the nearly 13.4 million shots administered to the state’s residents, accounting for 70.5% of the 12-and-older population. Of those, more than 6 million people are fully vaccinated — 54.5% of the eligible population — while almost 1.8 million need their follow-up shot.

Lehigh Valley residents are slightly above the statewide rate, with 424,351 people having received at least one of 722,371 jabs administered locally, accounting for 72.9% of the Valley’s eligible population. There are 328,280 locals who have completed their vaccination regimen — 56.4% of the eligible population — while about 17% of people have gotten their first dose.

Deaths

Overall: 17, compared with 24 on Tuesday. The seven-day moving average of deaths per day is 16, compared with 23 a week ago.

Senior Care: 3 deaths reported Wednesday, bringing the total to 13,334, accounting for 48.4% of the state’s 27,531 deaths.

Hospitalizations

There were 465 people hospitalized as of midday Wednesday compared with 492 Tuesday. Of those, 114 were in intensive care, and 80 were on ventilators. COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to decline precipitously across the state. Over the last seven days, there has been an average of 542 in the hospital for COVID-19 at any given time, the lowest number since early October.

Hospitals in the Lehigh Valley reported 39 COVID-19 patients Wednesday, compared with 41 Tuesday, including nine in intensive care, and six on ventilators. In the Lehigh Valley, the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations is at the lowest it has been since October with an average of 42 people hospitalized at any given time for COVID-19 over the last seven days. This is down significantly from the peak hospitalizations in mid-January when 450-485 or more people were hospitalized for COVID-19 in the Lehigh Valley at any given time.

Testing

There were 6,480 test results reported Wednesday, with 3.4% of them positive, compared with 3.5% on Tuesday.

The overall positive test rate is 17.8% since the state’s first cases were reported March 6 of last year.

Lehigh Valley

Cases: 20 additional case reports, with six in Lehigh County, and 14 in Northampton County. That brings the total to 75,623.

Deaths: One new death (zero in Lehigh County, and one in Northampton County), compared with zero the day before. That brings the total to 1,577 (861 in Lehigh, 716 in Northampton).
