Sometimes referred to as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, June 19, 1865 marks the date Union general Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to declare an end to slavery in Texas, despite the Emancipation Proclamation being issued two years earlier in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln.
