The man who shot and killed a 17-year-old in a hotel parking lot in West Long Beach late last month was defending a victim who had been robbed and shot, Long Beach police said Monday.

Police said the shooter, who was identified only as a male adult, walked into the police station on Thursday to be interviewed by detectives. Police said evidence, including video footage from the scene, corroborates that the shooter’s actions were in defense of a man who was fighting with the 17-year-old while being robbed and assaulted, police said.

The shooter has not been arrested.

The incident, which occurred at 11:20 p.m. on May 28 in the 3600 block of Santa Fe Avenue, left the 17-year-old dead and two other men wounded.

Police said the incident began when the 17-year-old began assaulting a victim in the parking lot while robbing him at gunpoint. At some point another man, who still has not been identified or located, joined in the robbery, police said.

The 17-year-old then fired his gun and injured both the victim and the other robber, who fled on foot.

The fight continued between the 17-year-old and the victim until another man, the shooter who later turned himself in, intervened and shot the 17-year-old before fleeing the scene, police said.

Detectives will present the facts of the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete, authorities said.
