Slide at Westmoreland County park set to reopen after nearly year-long closure

MOUNT PLEASANT TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Giant Slide at Mammoth Park is making a comeback this Tuesday, with some additional safety measures.

The Mt. Pleasant Township complex featuring two 100-foot slides was closed in August after a few people reported injuries. It was shut down to allow time for safety inspections and county officials to investigate.

County officials pushed ahead with about $30,000 worth of improvements in the area surrounding them. Many of the injuries were related to improper use, according to county officials.

Some of the updates that were installed include:

Parks officials encouraged users to adhere to safety protocols that will be posted on the slide in an announcement about Tuesday’s reopening on the Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation’s Facebook page.

  • Additional rubber safety surfacing at the slide landing areas, cargo net, and traverse course rock scramble
  • Installation of video surveillance cameras
  • Additional signage to further explain rules and regulations, and to highlight the amenities at the site
  • Cable barriers
  • Additional steps and railings to viewing areas
