McEnany claims ‘I never lied’ as Trump’s press secretary, citing religious faith

Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany claimed Sunday her faith in God barred her from ever telling a lie during her time working under former President Donald Trump.

During her speech before a crowd at conservative group Turning Point USA’s Young Women’s Leadership Summit Sunday, McEnany recalled a moment during a press conference last year when a journalist asked whether she would “pledge to never lie to [journalists] from the podium.”

She told reporters at the time, “I will never lie to you,” a vow that was tested almost immediately by political pundits and critics.

McEnany reiterated her promise from May 2020 during the Sunday speech, saying, “There was the question. ‘Will you ever lie to us?’ And I said without hesitation, ‘No.'”

“And I never did,” the former press secretary added. “As a woman of faith, as a mother of baby Blake, as a person who meticulously prepared at some of the world’s hardest institutions, I never lied. I sourced my information.”

Her response prompted applause from the audience as she further claimed news media unfairly labeled her a “liar” during her time working for the Trump White House.

“Our motto was this: ‘Offense only,'” McEnany said of the Trump administration’s strategy when speaking to the press. “Because I knew what we were up against. Republicans always get the bad headlines, always get the false stories, always get the lies, if I can use that word, told by the press. There is one standard for Democrats and another for Republicans. And we must be on offense,” she added.

Despite her past claims, multiple fact-checking media sites have pointed out misleading statements made by the former press secretary, and some have been categorized as outright lies.

McEnany also used the moment on Sunday to shed light on the recent report by the Interior Department’s inspector general, which found Trump did not order federal police to clear protesters from Lafayette Park last summer so he could walk to a Washington, D.C., church for a photo-op. Multiple outlets at the time reported the park was cleared at Trump’s direction.

The former press secretary now serves as an on-air political commentator for Fox News.
