HAMPTON, Va. - The Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal crash that happened on I-664 N, north of Power Plant Parkway in Hampton on Friday.

Police said the crash happened around 1 p.m.

The crash was initially reported as a hit-and-run. A preliminary investigation later revealed that the driver who died was at fault.

The driver of a 2009 Nissan Altima, identified as 50-year-old Kevin Wayne Riddick of Newport News, was driving northbound on I-664 in the right lane at a high rate of speed. Traffic came to an abrupt stop in the right lane, causing Riddick to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid running into the stopped vehicles.

When he swerved onto the shoulder, authorities say Riddick lost control of the vehicle, hit the jersey wall and overturned several times, causing him to be thrown from the vehicle.

State Police say Riddick may have hit a gold-colored SUV that continued traveling northbound.

Riddick's family has been notified of his death.

All lanes of traffic are have reopened, but the exit ramp to I-64 E is still shut down at this time.
