Just gone five o'clock near the Ponte Duca D'Aosta and along the banks of the River Tiber the first sights and sounds of a summer tournament football were brewing.

Faces were painted and flags were flying. If not flying then worn as capes, bandanas or sarongs by the ticketed few, drawn to the Olympic Stadium by the force of anticipation, hours before kick-off.

A noisy cluster of Turkey fans chose to accessorise their red replica shirts with plastic souvenir centurion's helmets, complete with face guards and a fetching red crest of imitation feathers.

This was how Euro 2020 came blinking into life in Rome. One year late. A tournament that might never have been. A tournament, some still argue, should never be.

But here it is. Football is delivering another staging post to more normal world. Let the first games in a post-Covid world begin. Bring a face covering and don't forget to sanitise.

Italy got is all rolling in style. The pace and movement of Roberto Mancini's fresh and exciting team left Turkey's defenders unable to recall the basics of track and trace as they conceded three goals in the second half.

Centre-half Merih Demiral turned the first into his own net from a firmly hit cross by Domenico Berardi before Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insignie stretched the lead.

'A wonderful evening,' declared Mancini. 'Important to get off to a good start. We produced an excellent performance against a team who are not as weak as they seemed.

'We deserve great credit for stopping them from playing. We were trying to entertain the fans here in the stadium and those watching at home.'

The teams kicked off with the atmosphere still crackling from the anthems and smoke lingering from the opening ceremony fireworks.

There was a military band, oversized balloons and drummers suspended from the roof by wires but the pre-match show was stolen by star tenor Andrea Bocelli and his soul-stirring performance of Nessun Dorma.

It would have rendered anyone old enough to recall Italia 90 on the brink of tears.

Maybe the sheer emotion overwhelmed Italy in the first half. Mancini's side have won back the hearts of the nation having banished memories of the World Cup disaster in 2018.

Forward Insigne was left deflated after his miss and for a while, Italy had been kept out by a stubborn backline from Turkey

Another good stop from Cakir saw the ball drop into the air inside the box, and Immobile looked to hook home a brave effort

The famously pink daily sports paper Gazzetta dello Sport even turned its front page blue on Friday.

'We are all blue,' roared the headline above a heart-shaped image of all the players.

Then they went and played in white, for some reason. Turkey were nominally the home team but the marketing department must have won the argument on the Azzurri's big day.

Jorginho dominated the midfield and Italy moved the ball with slick sequences of passing. Turkey were squeezed back into their own third but they survived until half time.

Insigne fired wide and captain Giorgio Chiellini saw a powerful header from a corner turned over by Turkey's goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. Immobile headed another difficult chance wide, straining for power and losing direction.

The energy pulsing through the stadium at kick-off was slowly turning into a mild tension.

Insigne, looking to curl a shot into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area, pulled his effort straight into the gloves of Cakir.

There were increasingly desperate appeals for penalties for handball, the third when a cross by the excellent Leonardo Spinazzola struck Zeki Celik on the hand was long and loud.

Dutch referee Danny Makkelie waited for the video check and played on. The disappointment vanished when Italy broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half.

Chiellini was faultless when called upon during the clash and had easily got the better of experienced Turkish ace Burak Yilaz
Yilmaz threw himself to the turf inside the box and then appealed for a penalty in vain following an altercation with Chiellini
Roberto Mancini's in-form men are now 28 games unbeaten and lived up to their tag as one of the tournament's dark horses

Demiral tried all he could to twist his torso and deflect Berardi's cross away from goal but it flew in the opposite direction and the seal was broken. Pressure eased and the white shirts poured forward freely.

Cakir held them at bay for a short time and made a fabulous save to keep out a deflected shot by Spinazzola only for the rebound to drop to Immobile who applied a cool finish for Italy's second of the night.

Mancini threw both fists up into the air. The points were his from here. Insigne finally found the target to make it 3-0 following a poor kick by Cakir and a blur of passes to slice open the Turkish back four yet again.

The biggest test to date of his nascent Italy side had been overcome with flair and a flourish. They huddled on the pitch after the final whistle and there are reasons to believe they can go be a force in this tournament.

'We have improved a great deal,' said Mancini. 'You don't wins games by chance. We play good football and we can improve significantly because we have young players.'

That was the buoyant mood as 16,000 slipped from the Olympic Stadium and back into the streets of Rome. It was a fine place to begin for a tournament that probably never should have been but only football can lift hearts like this.

FULL TIME - TURKEY 0-3 ITALY

That really was impressive from Italy.

They have started the tournament in style and laid down a serious marker for the trophy credentials, perhaps.

The damage was done after an own goal from Demiral, as well as strikes from Immobile and Insigne.

Thanks for following our coverage!

21:51

90+2min: Italy really want that clean sheet! Yilmaz was handed space to fire towards the far corner in Turkey's best chance.

It would have been easy for Chiellini to take his foot off the pedal a little, but instead he threw himself into a brilliant block and celebrated wildly.

You have to applaud that - what a reaction.

21:49

90min: We're into three added minutes at the end of this curtain-raiser.

The frustration is evident from Turkey now, and substitute Dervisoglu has also been booked for a poor challenge.

21:47

88min: Sound the klaxon, we've also had the tournament's first yellow card.

That honour was gone to Soyuncu, who was rightly cautioned for a late and clumsy tackle.

21:45

85min: Italy have made another substitution - with Bernardeschi on for Berardi.

If you're wondering about the shot count tonight... Italy have had 24.

Turkey, you ask? They've managed just one. It's been a chastening experience for them.

21:42

82min: The three points are firmly in Italy's hands now and they can afford to relax a little.

They want more goals, though, and that's shown in their latest changes.

Chiesa and Belotti have replaced Insigne and Immobile respectively.

21:37
GOAL! TURKEY 0-3 ITALY (Insigne 79)

That's a gorgeous finish from Insigne, and Italy have a third!

Turkey made a real hash of trying to play out from the back, and Insigne was played through on goal instead.

He then calmly bent a wonderful effort beyond the rooted Cakir and into the far corner. That was textbook.

21:36

77min: There has been another reshuffle for Turkey, with Dervisoglu replacing Karaman.

They need an absolute miracle to get anything from this one, but it's not going to happen.

21:34

75min: That was probably Turkey's best moment of the game on a tough evening for them, but the chance went begging!

A ball into the box looked like it may cause problems, but Donnarumma was able to gather.

Any form of contact there, and Italy's keeper would have been in trouble.

21:32

73min: Italy have made their second substitution of the evening.

Cristante is on for Locatelli. He has slotted straight in and will look to keep the ball moving.

21:30

70min: Turkey were able to conjure up a bit of pressure down the other end after shipping the second, but again Italy stood firm superbly.

This has been superb from the Azzurri so far tonight, and sets down a real marker for the rest of the tournament.

There may even be more goals in this one for them.

21:24
GOAL! TURKEY 0-2 ITALY (Immobile 66)

There's the second for Italy, and that should be game, set and match! This is a real lesson from the hosts.

It was coming, and when it did it was Immobile who was on hand to coolly sweep home the loose ball.

Spinazzola was again the free man on the right, and he raced in to smash a strike towards that that Cakir pushed out brilliantly with one hand.

Immobile was first to react, and the ace slotted into the net at the first time of asking.

21:23

63min: Turkey look very tired and ragged out there now - and Senol Gunes has responded with two changes.

Ayhan and Kahveci are on for Tufan and Yokuslu respectively.

21:21

60min: Cakir has been superb today, and he stopped Italy from netting again when Locatelli was able to bear down on goal.

The effort was hit with plenty of venom, but the Turkish stopper got down quickly to palm away.

21:18

58min: Turkey really are all over the place now and look there for the taking.

Insigne wriggled into space to shoot as Italy came forward once again, but took a little too much time.

When the strike did come in, Soyuncu was able to throw himself into a fine block.

21:14

55min: Italy have their tails up now in search of a second goal.

Spinazzola has been so dangerous out in that right channel, and the full back tried his luck from a narrow angle.

Cakir stood tall to beat away, and Immobile was unable to hook in a rebound when Turkey failed to hack the ball clear.

21:11
GOAL! TURKEY 0-1 ITALY (Demiral OG 53)

We have lift-off at Euro 2020! First blood to Italy!

Berardi was played down the left-hand side and slotted a dangerous ball across the face of goal.

It sparked all sorts of confusion at the heart of Turkey's defense, and a cruel deflection off the helpless Demiral saw Cakir finally beaten.

That's deserved for Italy in all honesty. Can they now go on to make their advantage more comfortable?

21:10

50min: That was sloppy from Jorginho and, out of nowhere, Under found himself scrambling away.

Spinazzola did superbly to track him all the way, and when the strike came in from a tight angle, a little deflection carried it through to Donnarumma.

21:06

47min: Roberto Mancini was not happy with that, and his jacket is now off.

Italy won a corner soon after the whistle went, but they opted to work it short.

In the end, it was a very strange idea with Berardi caught offside. Oh dear.

21:03
BACK UNDERWAY!

46min: The ball is rolling again in Rome for the second half!

We've seen a change for both teams. Di Lorenzo has replaced Florenzi for Italy, and Turkey have introduced Under in place of Yazici.

There was no little car on the field before the restart, unfortunately. That was bizarre.

20:47
HALF TIME - TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

We're goalless at the interval and that's certainly a surprise!

Italy dominated that first half as they moved the ball well and carved out chance after chance. It's the finishing touch that has been found wanting so far.

Chiellini was presented with the best chance of the game, but his powerful header from a corner was palmed over brilliantly by Cakir.

Turkey haven't had a single shot on goal, meanwhile, and will have to do more after the break.

Join us shortly for the rest of the action!

20:47

45min: The arms went up again from Italy's players for another handball shout, but again VAR has taken a look and waved away the appeals.

It was a cross from Spinazzola on the by-line that struck Celik, but the small distance was key there. That would have been very harsh.

20:44

43min: That Turkey penalty area is ridiculously congested when Italy push forward, making it so difficult to get a clear shot on goal.

Immobile carved out just that soon after, though, but again Cakir was able to make a comfortable stop right down the middle.

Senol Gunes was absolutely furious at his team just before that for not pushing out of their box.

20:42

40min: And there's another shot from Italy! This time it was Berardi, who jinked in from the right.

Despite the slight switch-up in position, the result was the same - the ball blazing into the stand with Cakir untroubled.

Turkey just don't look comfortable closing down in those areas.

20:39

37min: Chiellini was afforded space and time to support the attack once again, and the ball was teed up for Insigne just outside the box.

With a swish of his right boot, he tried to find the far corner, but Cakir was able to hold comfortably down the centre of the goal.

20:38

35min: That was better from Turkey, and there's the threat they can pose on the breakaway.

Yilmaz was played in behind down the channel and looked to draw out Chiellini.

He then clipped in a delivery, which Donnarumma raced out to parry clear unconvincingly, and Italy were able to come away.

20:34

32min: Another chance has been wasted, although that one was not easy.

Barella was slotted into space on the left-hand side of the box, and his cute little ball dropped across goal for Immobile.

His header had plenty of power, but it dropped wide of the far post with Cakir at full stretch.

20:31

29min: Italy have got Turkey exactly where they want them, but the finishing touch has been lacking so far.

Another patient move was worked to Barella around 20 yards out, but his attempt was dreadful and skewed behind.

It really seems like Turkey's danger lies on the counter, but their lack of pace is really hurting them.

20:29

26min: Turkey were able to get their foot on the ball a bit more over the last few minutes, but they have been unable to do anything with it so far.

Their opponents hold the advantage in every department so far apart from the score line, and they're really knocking on the door now.

20:24

23min: Superb save from Cakir! Italy looked a real danger on dead balls and Insigne whipped a fine corner in from the left.

Chiellini was criminally unmarked in the centre of the box, but his powerful header was acrobatically pushed over the crossbar.

20:23

21min: Italy appealed for a penalty, but nothing was given! Immobile jinked into a good position and let fly at goal just over 20 yards out.

The ball cracked against Soyuncu, whose arms were firmly down by his side, and the referee rightly waved away the shouts.

20:21

19min: Another strike has come in from Italy, but this one was much more ambitious.

Bonucci, who has been heavily involved so far, opted to try his luck from around 30 yards, but the shot drifted harmlessly off target.

20:19

17min: What a chance! That was so incisive from Italy, but Insigne was unable to convert.

A lovely one-two with Barella saw the forward played through into the box on the right, and he looked to bend one into the far corner.

There was plenty of whip on the effort, but the ball whistled the wrong side of the post.

20:15

13min: As I say that, that was much better from Turkey. They broke down the left-hand side through Yilmaz.

He had managed to sneak in between Italy's centre halves, but Bonucci was able to meet the following cross to end the danger.

20:13

11min: Italy have built up a lovely tempo on the ball and are stroking it around nicely.

Turkey have flourished under Senol Gunes by staying steadfast at the back, and they won't make it easy for the hosts to get through.

As yet, neither goalkeeper has been forced into the tournament's first save.

20:12

9min: Yilmaz will be key for Turkey tonight and he was afforded his first whiff of an opening a bit earlier.

Italy's centre back pairing of Chiellini and Bonucci, with their 107 international caps between them, quickly slammed the door, though.

20:07

6min: It's been a very shaky start indeed from Turkey.

They have hardly kept hold of the ball and Italy are looking dangerous.

With their deep shape, they're penned inside their own half currently.

20:05

3min: The crowd have made themselves heard in these early knockings, and the first half-chance was carved out by Italy.

A long ball down to Florenzi on the right was just about met by him on the by-line, and his pull back found Immobile.

From a tight angle, the frontman could only guide his soft effort into the side netting.

20:01
KICK OFF!

1min: I have absolutely no idea why, but a little RC car has just raced across the pitch to deliver the ball to the centre circle.

And with that, we are underway in Rome! Euro 2020, here we go.

19:54
It's time for the national anthems

Here we go! The teams are out on the pitch and will line-up for the national anthems.

The start of a month filled with twists, turns, tears and jubilation starts right here.

As we speak, the camera has panned across the Turkey players and staff, all of whom are passionately belting out their anthem.

Italy have also taken their turn and were similarly giving it their all. It's a backdrop of glorious noise.

19:53
That will take some beating!

Let's hope the first game of this tournament isn't actually overshadowed by that ceremony.

The visuals were stunning, with so many colours being pushed into the dimming sky in Rome.

Now, the teams are in the tunnel and it's almost time for kick-off.

Let's do this.

19:49
Wow... that was special

A true goosebumps moment, that. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli has just taken to the middle of the field to sing 'Nessun Dorma'.

Behind him were the flags of every nation at the tournament, a dancer being suspended in the air by balloons and fireworks blasting into the sky.

Absolutely stunning. If you weren't excited to get Euro 2020 underway, you have to be now!

19:44
The marching bands are here!

The ceremony is in full swing down inside the Stadio Olimpico.

We've got a massive marching band, huge coloured footballs and drummers hanging down from around the roof.

It doesn't get much better than this.

Oh, actually it does!

19:40
A reminder of the times

With all this excitement, it's easy to forget we're still in the middle of a pandemic!

That's exactly what football is about, though, and let's hope this tournament throws up many more highlights and memories for the masses.

There are strict protocols in place to keep the crowd safe this evening - and right now, they're being treated to the opening ceremony!

19:34
The hard work begins...

Both sets of players are out on the field and warming up for this opening fixture.

It really is an electric atmosphere now in the Stadio Olimpico, and Italy will look to draw on that to get off to the perfect start.

As for Turkey, this is their fifth appearance at the European Championships. They will be dreaming of matching their last four finish from 2008.

Senol Gunes has his players ready and raring to go for this one, so expect a tight game tonight.

19:24
The view from the ground

Sportsmail's MATT BARLOW: There were cowboy hats and Mohawk wigs in Italian colours.

There were air-horns, the unmistakable sound of a vuvuzela, sirens and a helicopter circling overhead.

Flares smouldered, songs were sung and cold Italian lager was being drained from plastic glasses.

A noisy cluster of Turkey fans chose to accessorise their red replica shirts with plastic souvenir centurion’s helmets, complete with face guards.

This was how Euro 2020 came blinking into life in Rome. One year late. A tournament that might never have been.

A tournament, some still argue, should never be.

19:21
Stay tuned for the opening ceremony!

You can't have the first game of a major tournament without at least a little pomp and bombast.

The opening ceremony will be held tonight with Martin Garrix, Bono and The Edge holding a virtual performance before kick-off.

UEFA have said that technology will be used to help bring spectators closer to the spectacle.

The official song for Euro 2020 will be performed tonight.

Andrea Bocelli is also set to sing 'Nessun Dorma', which was Italia 90's official anthem.

19:09
Bullish Turkey want to meet Italy in the final

Both Hakan Calhanoglu and Senol Gunes have said they hope to make it out of Group A and then face Italy in the final.

AC Milan playmaker Calhanoglu opened up on the excitement in Turkey's squad ahead of the curtain-raiser and says they are in positive spirits.

There is no doubting that both nations will be confident of reaching the first knockout round at least - but it all starts tonight!

Only an hour to go until kick-off!

We're so, so close to getting Euro 2020 underway!

Who do you think will take home the trophy? Who will the surprise packages be?

Will there be any shock results or early knockouts?

Let us know how you can see the next few weeks panning out.

18:57
Plenty of familiar faces in Turkey's team

There will be several names in the line-up for Turkey tonight that Premier League and Ligue 1 supporters will definitely recognise.

Three players from the Lille team that won Ligue 1 against all the odds start - namely Burak Yilmaz, Yusuf Yazici and Zeki Celik.

Leicester's Caglar Soyuncu and West Brom's Okay Yokuslu also feature from the off.

On the bench, meanwhile, are Ozan Kabak - formerly of Liverpool - and Cengiz Under.

The squad were greeted with a resounding roar from their travelling faithful after they stepped out to inspect the pitch earlier.

18:52
No surprises there for Italy...

As predicted, Italy have named the same team that beat the Czech Republic 4-0 in a friendly.

Manuel Locatelli has indeed slotted into the heart of midfield, and Domenico Berardi starts ahead of Federico Chiesa.

Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne are the men tasked with getting Italy off to a flying start with some goals this evening.

The Azzurri have arrived at the ground and look very sleek indeed. Nobody does fashion quite like the Italians!

18:44
Italy may be unchanged from Czech Republic win

Thanks to the expanded 26-man squads for the teams at this tournament, predicting the line-ups has just got a little more difficult.

For Italy, however, it would not be surprising if they named the same side that beat the Czech Republic last week.

That would see Domenico Berardi, who is bang in form for his nation, given the nod out wide on the right.

Manuel Locatelli is also set to start with Marco Verratti not fully fit yet - and Italy have asked for permission to call up Lorenzo Pellegrini.

The change would be in place of Gaetano Castrovilli, who picked up an injury in training.

At the back, expect the usual trio of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Giorgio Chiellini and Leanardo Bonucci to keep their places.

18:36
That's not a bad sight, is it?

We've got supporters back at the football and the sun is out. It's not all doom and gloom, eh?

There are expected to be roughly 16,000 fans in total inside the Stadio Olimpico tonight.

Let's see what difference that makes when the players get this tournament started at 8pm.

The atmosphere is already bubbling away nicely...

18:30
All eyes on the knockouts for Turkey

Those tipping Italy to get their campaign underway with a comfortable win tonight will probably end up very wrong come around 10pm.

That's because Turkey have proven equally difficult to beat, and they have picked up some brilliant results against the world's best.

Senol Gunes and his team have lost just three times in 26 matches, and France were unable to down them at home or away in qualifying.

Turkey also beat Holland 4-2 back in March, with Lille ace Burak Yilmaz and the ever-creative Hakan Calhanoglu catching the eye.

After one too many disappointing finishes at tournaments, they will hope to do better this time around.

18:21
Roberto Mancini's high-flying Italy tipped to go far

Having lost just two of his 30 games in charge of Italy, Roberto Mancini really has stepped up for his country at just the right time.

The last time they suffered defeat was back in 2018, and all the ingredients are in place for them to look to challenge for the trophy this summer.

Of course, they will want to avoid a slip-up tonight, but Italy, who will often be in front of their supporters, look a real force again.

18:12
When in Rome...

Good evening, all! Welcome along to Sportsmail's live coverage of Euro 2020's curtain-raiser as Italy take on Turkey.

We've had to wait a whole year for the tournament but finally it's time to get this summer feast of football on the road - and what a way to kick things off this is.

Italy are the favourites to top Group A and will fancy their chances. They're on a 27-game unbeaten streak and look rejuvenated under Roberto Mancini.

Their squad is a perfect blend of experience and youth, and they have unsurprisingly been tipped to go far in the competition.

Turkey, meanwhile, are definitely one of the dark horses to keep an eye on. They're stubborn defensively and hold quality in all the right areas.

You can follow all the build-up and live updates right here with us, and we'll also bring you all the colour from the opening ceremony.

There's so much to look forward to, so let's get started...
