Marquette University students must be vaccinated

    2021-06-11

Earlier this week, Marquette University announced that all students attending campus classes for the upcoming fall session must be fully vaccinated by August 1st. If a student has only taken the first Pfizer or if a student has only taken the first Moderna immunization shot without taken the second shot, then that student will not be allowed to step foot on campus grounds in Milwaukee, WI.

This announcement was sent to all of the students by an e-mail by Michael R. Lovell, the president of Marquette University. Students will be required to upload a photo of their vaccination card to the university's health department portal before August 1st.

That will give students a month and a half to take either both Pfizer shots, or both Moderna shots, or the one Johnson & Johnson shot, or the one Astra-Zeneca shot. If students are looking to obtain the two Pfizer or Moderna shots, then they should schedule an appointment soon because the time between the Pfizer vaccination shots is normally three weeks, while the advised time between the Moderna shots is four weeks. If students are looking to take the Johnson & Johnson jab or the Astra-Zeneca shot, then they will have more time before scheduling an appointment.

Students that are immunocompromised and students that will not take the vaccination based upon their religious beliefs will be given an exception. However, they will be tested for COVID-19 whenever the university wants to test them.

Here is a snippet of the email that was sent out to the students by President Lovell.

A vaccinated student population will allow us to provide you with a richer in-person experience, reduce testing, and let you interact more freely across campus.

How is it possible that this university can enforce this mandate to all students at Marquette? The first reason is that Marquette is a private university. Since private universities are corporations and the US Supreme Court has deemed that corporations are people based upon the Citizens United v FEC ruling back in 2010. That means that private universities can pretty much do whatever they want because they now have rights just like citizens do in the United States of America.

The second reason is more direct; immunization requirements are mandatory within the state of Wisconsin.

To protect students and children from diseases that are preventable by immunization, Wisconsin law requires all students to show that they have received the required immunizations or have a signed waiver

The COVID-19 vaccine has been proven to prevent the coronavirus from spreading over the past few months. Before there was a vaccine for the coronavirus, the peak amount of cases in one day in the state was 8,510 on 11/18/20. In comparison, the amount of COVID-19 cases recorded yesterday was 185. That is a 4600% decrease in the amount of coronavirus cases before and after the vaccine.

Although this mandate appears to be infringing upon the rights of the students, this mandate mirrors the same rule in which students were not allowed to go to elementary school unless they received their booster shots that prevented mumps, measles, rubella, tetanus, and tuberculosis.

Having all of the students vaccinated means that they no longer have to wear a mask on campus. The on-campus mask requirement for everyone was lifted last week on the same day when the city of Milwaukee put an end to their masking mandate.

However, some of the faculty still wanted the mask requirement to remain intact for everyone that sets foot upon the campus at Marquette University due to a weird quirk in this vaccination mandate.

Although the students are being compelled to be vaccinated by August 1, all faculty and staff at Marquette University along with guests are not required to be vaccinated. Forcing the students to be vaccinated while the administrators can remain unvaccinated is unethical. This mandate appears to be a "Do as I say, not as I do" type of moment that is implemented by parents that lack discipline.

Knowing that the professors could possibly be unvaccinated should give students more impetus to be vaccinated because they could contract the coronavirus during a lecture.

While everything is continuing to be re-opened over the next few days across the country, we will continue to hear more announcements about businesses only allowing vaccinated people on to their premises.
