Musical artist Mary J. Blige is throwing her support behind a candidate in the New York City mayoral race with days left to go before the June 22 primary, Page Six reports.
In a new ad, Blige stumps for Ray McGuire, a former Citigroup executive. She notes his upbringing as the child of a single mother, saying, “He understands the struggle of so many New Yorkers.”
She added, “He is the businessman with the business plan… He’s not about the look. He’s about the grind.”
Blige also touted his dedication to minority communities.
“He cares about black and brown people getting ahead and children, and women,” she said.
Blige previously showed support for McGuire by signing on to a letter titled, “Women for Ray,” Essence Magazine notes.
The “Be Without You” singer is one of several A-listers to support McGuire, who has vowed to boost the film tax credit for the city. Among other big names to endorse the Wall Street giant are actress Gwyneth Paltrow, filmmaker Spike Lee and comedic actor Steve Martin.
McGuire is not a top contender so far in the race, which recent polling shows is being led by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, former presidential hopeful Andrew Yang and former sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia, NBC 4 New York reports.
