McCarthy says Pelosi’s failure to address ‘abhorrent’ Omar controversy shows ‘Democrats are tolerant of anti-Semitism’

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s failure to address the controversy surrounding Rep. Ilhan Omar shows “Democrats are tolerant of anti-Semitism and sympathizing with terrorists.”

“It’s time for the Speaker to act,” McCarthy tweeted Thursday, calling comments Omar recently made “anti-Semitic & anti-American” and “abhorrent.”

“Speaker Pelosi’s continued failure to address the issues in her caucus sends a message to the world that Democrats are tolerant of anti-Semitism and sympathizing with terrorists,” McCarthy added.

On Monday, Omar compared “unthinkable atrocities” committed by the United States and Israel to those committed by Hamas, Afghanistan, and the Taliban.

She also accused the U.S. and the other entities of “alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

After backlash from a group of Democratic lawmakers, Omar said it was “shameful” for her fellow Democrats to call her out. She also accused them of using “islamophobic tropes.”

“The islamophobic tropes in this statement are offensive. The constant harassment & silencing from the signers of this letter is unbearable,” she added in the tweet.

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Berg said the Democratic letter does not go far enough to criticize Omar and called for her to be stripped of her committee assignments.

“If Democrats truly cared about Ilhan Omar’s anti-American and anti-Semitic rhetoric, they would immediately take action to remove her from her committee assignments,” Berg said in a statement. “Speaker Pelosi’s silence on Omar’s raging anti-Semitism is downright cowardly.”

Several members of Congress have also echoed these calls over the past couple of days.
