A Long Beach man accused of stabbing his 67-year-old roommate to death pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a murder charge.

The two men shared an apartment at the Villages at Cabrillo housing complex, where the stabbing occurred, according to authorities. Both were veterans, a focus demographic for the facility, which provides housing and supportive services to formerly homeless people.

The incident took place in the evening hours of Sunday, May 23, when an altercation between the two escalated, police said. The victim, Ricky Rodriguez, was declared dead at the scene.

The suspect, Eric Doore, remains in custody in lieu of $2 million bail, records show. He is scheduled to appear in court again on June 24.
