Fox News' Chris Wallace on Sunday challenged Corey Lewandowski, an ally of former President Donald Trump, over his defense of false claims that last year's presidential election was fraudulent.
In the interview on "Fox News Sunday," Lewandowski addressed reports that Trump had discussed a conspiracy theory that he could return to office in August.
Lewandowski said that he had frequently spoken with Trump since he left the White House and that he'd "never had that conversation about him being reinstated."
Lewandowski described "election-integrity matters" and provided one example of a dead person's vote being counted in Pennsylvania, though experts told FactCheck.org in November that it wasn't enough to substantiate the claim that the entire election was tainted.
Lewandowski criticized the media's response to that case. Wallace hit back, pointing out that Trump's election-fraud claims were repeatedly rejected in court and by a Supreme Court seen as ideologically friendly to Trump.
"You keep blaming this on the media," Wallace said. "The fact of the matter is this went to more than 60 different court cases, and you were beaten in every one. The Supreme Court refused to even hear the Trump challenges. So please don't blame this on the media. You had your day in court, and you lost."
Trump's baseless election-fraud claim has become a core belief among his supporters. Lewandowski was one of several Trump allies who sought to uncover evidence of mass fraud in the election, but none exists to support it.
Since his defeat, Trump has teased a return to politics. At a rally in North Carolina on Saturday, he claimed that his election-fraud lies were about trying to "save democracy."
"I'm not the one trying to undermine democracy," Trump said, "I am the one who's trying to save it. Please remember that."
