If you've never been to Wisconsin before it's time to plan your visit and head out on a Wisconsin road trip.

Wisconsin is often overlooked as a travel destination but has so much to offer visitors. Whether you like exploring new cities or spending time outdoors, Wisconsin is sure to have something to offer.

I've included both city and outdoor destinations in this article and hope you find a few ideas that spark your interest.

    1. Door County

Door County is a popular weekend getaway destination for Green Bay locals. Door County is a peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan and is popular for its beautiful lake views and many bed and breakfasts.

Visitors to Door County will want to visit Cave Point County Park, take the ferry to Washington Island, visit Whitefish Dunes State Park, get some sun at the local beaches, and do a little wine tasing.

    2. Madison

Madison is a lively and fun college town and home to the state's historic Wisconsin State Capitol building.

The state capitol building sits in the center of Capitol Square and was designed after the Capitol Building in Washington DC. It's absolutely beautiful and worth getting an up close look during your visit. Free guided tours are also available and highly recommended.

Madison is also home to five lakes, two of which sit on either side of downtown Madison. With the close proximity of the lakes, Madison is also a great destination for enjoying the outdoors.

Visitors can enjoy sailing, kayaking, hiking, and biking on and around the lakes.

    3. Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva is a small lakeside town located about 50 minutes west of Milwaukee.

The town is a popular vacation spot for Chicago residents, many of whom also own vacation homes around the lake.

One of the most popular things to do in Lake Geneva is to walk a section of the Lake Geneva Shore Path, a 26 mile trail that circles the entire lake.

The Lake Geneva Shore Path crosses though public parks and many private residences which gives you a great view of the many mansions lining the lake shore.

Lake Geneva also has a small downtown with many great restaurants, candy shops, and local shops. Be sure to pick up some fresh fudge while you're in town to take home with you.

    4. Milwaukee

Milwaukee is Wisconsin's biggest city and home to some very fun things to do.

If you've never visited the city before I recommend starting out at the Milwaukee Riverwalk which winds along the Milwaukee River. Here you can walk along the river, grab lunch at a local restaurant, or stop into one of the local breweries to sample some of the area's best craft beers.

You'll also want to visit the city's famous Milwaukee Art Museum pictured above. Afterwards head over to Wisconsin Avenue to do the city's Sculpture Walk.

If you plan your visit for September, consider attending the city's famous Summerfest event. It usually takes place in the summer, as the name of the festival implies, but has been pushed back to fall this year. Check the Summerfest website for the event calendar and to purchase show tickets.

    5. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is located on the very northern edge of Wisonsin on the shores of Lake Superior. It's about a 6 hour drive from Milwaukee.

Apostle Islands is famous for its beautiful rocky shoreline, sheer cliffs, and 21 islands. The lakeshore area is also home to many sea caves which are popular with park visitors.

Visitors to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore can enjoy hiking, kayaking, boating, sailing, and camping.
