The Cleveland Indians placed Jordan Luplow (left ankle sprain) on the 10-day injured list and recalled right-hander Eli Morgan, who started the opener of a three-game series against Toronto on Friday in his major league debut.

Luplow, who has dealt with nagging ankle issues since March, homered for the seventh time this season on Tuesday in Detroit but is hitting only .173 through 36 games.

Indians manager Terry Francona said Luplow had an MRI exam.

“We’re trying to figure it out,” Francona said. “I think it’s in a little different area or examining different from spring training.

“We’re trying to, obviously, find out what’s going on there. Ultimately what matters is if something’s bothering the player and he can’t play like he wants, you can call it anything you want, but we need to find out.”

A third-year Indians outfielder, Luplow is a career .222 hitter who played his first two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates before joining Cleveland.

Morgan, 25, was an eighth-round draft pick by Cleveland in 2017 and has posted a 3.95 ERA in three starts this season with Triple-A Columbus.
